FAQs about the M.A. in Arts Politics

When are applications to this program due? Can I apply for Spring admission?

Applications are due in early January.  For the current year’s deadline and a complete list of application requirements please visit http://graduate.tisch.nyu.edu/object/artspolitics_reqs.html  There is no Spring enrollment for the M.A. in Arts Politics.  The program runs from September to May of each year.   top

How long does it take to complete the M.A. in Arts Politics?

It's a one year (two semester) intensive program. Students take 18 credits per semester (instead of the typical 12 credits per semester). Having a one year program is more cost effective for many students.  This also enables students who are mid-career to find the time to return to school while maintaining their current pursuits.  top

Is there required curriculum for this program? How many elective courses can I take?

Yes there are four required courses for this program.  They are “Issues in Arts Politics,” “Seminar in Arts Activism,” “Graduate Colloquium,” and “Graduate Fieldwork.” Full descriptions of these courses can be found on this page http://app.tisch.nyu.edu/object/artspolitics.html Along with these 12 required credits, an additional 8 credits must be taken in courses within the Department of Art and Public Policy.  The remaining 16 credits may be taken either in our department or in other programs/departments.  top

How do I take courses in other departments at NYU?

Procedures for registration vary but often include permission of instructor. top

Do M.A. candidates write and defend a thesis?

No. Students in the M.A. in Arts Politics undertake an interventionist project of their own devising through the course “Seminar in Arts Activism” in the Spring.  There is a public presentation of this work.top

Are there regular meetings with an advisor? Are there regular meetings with fellow students within the department?

Yes, there is regular advisement connected to registration, mid-term progress and final projects.  In the Fall, students meet once a week at the Graduate Colloquium and in the Spring students meet every other week to discuss their on-going fieldwork and interventionist projects. top

What kinds of internships have been associated with the program?

Students have arranged their own internships and field work based on interest.  The department can assist in making these arrangements.  The Office of Community connections, run under departmental aegis is a clearing-house for community-based internships.  top

Can I study part-time?

Students are expected to enroll full time.  Where students do not complete all requirements in two semesters they may do so in a subsequent semester. top

Can I make an appointment to meet with someone within the department?

Yes, please email tisch.app@nyu.edu to arrange an appointment with the Chair of the program or one of the faculty members.  If you are unable to visit New York, we can arrange a phone appointment for you.top

When will I be notified of the decision?

The notification period ranges from March 15th to April 15th. In general, most decisions are finalized and sent by the first week of April. top

What is the tuition cost for this program? Is there financial aid available?

The current tuition costs can be found at http://graduate.tisch.nyu.edu/page/tuition.html There is some financial aid available, it is awarded to students during the application process.  If you have received a financial aid award you will be notified of your acceptance into the program and the award at the same time.   Graduate admissions can provide students with other financial options such as applications to loans and grants.  Please visit their website for more information.top

Are teaching assistant positions available?

No. There is some departmental work study, but M.A. students are not appointed as T.A.stop

Do I have to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)?

No, the M.A. in Arts Politics does not require the GRE.top

Is a bachelor's degree required for all programs?

Yes. You must have an undergraduate degree or anticipate completing your undergraduate degree prior to matriculation to apply to the M.A. in Arts Politics.  top
