Congratulations to ITP Alumnus, Jake Barton ('03) and his company, Local Projects on the launch of this new project.
One year, thirty five maps, and a terrabyte later, we are pleased to launch "Timescapes", the new orientation film for the Museum of the City of New York (1220 Fifth Avenue at 104th Street, NYC).
Digitally projected on three panoramic screens, this 25-minute presentation tells the epic story of the nation's largest city from a geographic perspective, through a series of newly created computer-animated maps, and a trove of historic photographs, prints, and paintings from the Museum's collections.
The film is a collaboration with James Sanders, co-writer with Ric Burns of the Emmy Award-winning, eight-part PBS series, /New York: A Documentary/. The voice-over narration is provided by Stanley Tucci, featuring the voices of Cynthia Nixon, Pete Hamill, John Guare, and others.
The presentation, which will run every half-hour, offers an immersive experience: three screens, more than thirteen feet wide in all, showing numerous images and maps through multiple projectors, surrounding the audience with images, digital surround sound, and narration. Over thirty-five new digital maps of New York were custom created for the film, demonstrating the delicate interplay between the land, water, transportation and commerce that produced the immense metropolis that is New York today.
